We are all meant to be naturalists, each in his own degree, and it is inexcusable to live in a world so full of the marvels of plant and animal life and to care for none of these things.

-Ms. Mason

Children must be taught how to use a nature journal.

Telling them to “draw something” in their journals is not enough. They need direction and training.

Keeping a journal helps us look more closely at nature.

Reading about nature isn’t enough for children to build a relationship.

A curious mind is cultivated by living ideas about nature. Children get these best from their real life mother-teacher.

Without instruction, exploration won’t be able to lead children to truth about how God ordered the world.

What is nature study?

Nature study is an old practice going back to the ancients. The practice of paying attention to plants, animals, birds and insects, categorizing them and finding uses for them can be traced to Eden

We want our children to develop a RELATIONSHIP with nature. The best way for this relationship to develop is through long hours outside AND purposeful lessons about nature. Nature study provides the framework for teaching children about creation.

Many families struggle to get nature study in regularly. The greatest barrier to doing nature study is that mothers don’t feel confident about the names of plants or what to look for. As Ms. Mason says, “we are all meant to be naturalists.” We simply need guidance and direction on what to look for once we are out in the Wild.
